Suddenly last month I got a very erratic speedo needle. I disconnected the gauge end and squirted cable lube into the cable, hooked it back up and started to get less bounce above 30.
It’s better, but I’m curious whether it can be made smoother. Any tip will be appreciated |

You probably have a bend that is too sharp for the cable and conduit, so the cable is getting bound up by a turn that is too sharp for it. These cars are very sensitive to this problem in my experience.

I would think not, is the cable original? could there be a kink under the dash

Going to check the cable behind the gauge tomorrow. Once cruising above 50, the needle is pretty smooth.

On my car its the bend that starts where the speedo cable comes out of the center tunnel and up to the back of the speedometer which seems to be the place where the cable binds up if its not routed "just right."

The speedo on my car has always oscillated wildly at 30mph and below. I assumed it was a Porsche feature to encourage the driver to accelerate to a higher speed where a more accurate reading could be established.

Update: Gonzo54 (Ric) came over and we straightened the cable run between the angle dive and the firewall. Then checked behind the Speedo to make sure the curve was smooth and wide.
Both ends were lube with Cable Lube before attaching the ends. The first test drive showed good improvement. Later I made a short trip and the needle became very stable. |
